Local Job Search Sites

By Alison Doyle, About.com

These are top sites for finding local job listings. Remember to "think local" when you want to find a job in a specific location. Your job search should focus on local job search resources.

Craig's List

There's nothing fancy about Craig's List, but, that doesn't matter. The simple list of jobs works and I know lots of people who have had good luck finding local jobs using Craig's List. Click on the city that interests you, then click on the type of job you are interested in and/or search by keyword to review the list of job openings.

Help Wanted Ads

Some employers still only list jobs in the local newspaper, so the help wanted ads are a good source of local jobs. Most papers have the classifieds online, so don't forget to check there for job listings. There should be a link to the Jobs section from the front page of your local newspaper.

Indeed.com

Indeed includes job listings from hundreds of web sites including major job boards, top newspapers, as well as hundreds of associations and company career pages. Search by city, state or zip code or click on Advanced Search to search for jobs within a certain amount of miles from a location.

SimplyHired.com

Search SimplyHired by city and state or zip code to find local jobs. The Advanced Search option lets you select jobs only in that location or within a certain radius of it. Also, click on More below the job listing to findconnections at companies, research salaries, map the location of the job, and locate similar jobs in the same area.

State Job Listings

There are a variety of city, state, and local job search sites, where you will find postings for jobs in a specific geographic location. Review local job listings, career resources, and employment information listed by state.

Chamber of Commerce Web Sites

The Chamber of Commerce in your town (or the town where you want to work) is an excellent source of local job listings. Companies that belong to the Chamber of Commerce often list on the Chamber Job Board first and there will often be less competition for available positions.

State Employment Resources: Job-Hunt.Org

Job-Hunt.Org has an extensive list of employment resources for each U.S. state, including job listings, job search networking and support, and major employers.
